A 3D-printed prototype makes geometry, handling and installation testable before further units are produced. Depending on the project, the focus may be function, external form, an assembly check or preparation for a small batch. That objective determines the process, material and level of detail.

Functional prototype or visual model
A functional prototype can test available space, movement, fasteners or handling. A visual model focuses more strongly on proportions, surface and appearance. One sample can only cover both purposes when the requirements are compatible.
We therefore define the test questions first: which dimensions must be accurate, which loads are realistic and which properties are only illustrative?
From an idea to a printable model
STEP or native CAD data is ideal for design changes. STL and 3MF files can be checked for printability. If only a sketch, measurements, photos or a sample exists, 3DOrder can provide the required modelling work.
Revision rounds, approvals and delivery of files are defined in the quotation so the manufactured version remains traceable.
FDM, SLA and iteration
FDM is often used for robust geometry checks, larger components and functional samples. SLA can be useful for fine detail and high-quality surfaces. The process is selected for the actual test objective.
Findings from the first sample are incorporated into a new version. Transition to a small batch is planned only after the critical points have been checked.

Frequently asked questions
Can 3DOrder start without a finished CAD file?
Yes. Depending on the project, sketches, dimensions, photos or a sample can provide the basis. The modelling scope is quoted in advance.
Must the first prototype use the intended production material?
Not always. A different material can be sufficient for a geometry check. If material behaviour is part of the test, the selection must reflect that purpose.
How many revision rounds are included?
The number of revision and approval rounds is agreed for the individual project in the quotation.
