Jigs, fixtures and assembly aids
Typical tasks include drilling or positioning templates, assembly nests, part holders, sorting aids, protective covers and ergonomic handles. Design follows the workpiece, process step and required repeatability.
A good jig does not automatically prevent every operating error. Stops, markings, insertion direction and foreseeable misuse are considered together.
Input and approval
Useful input includes workpiece CAD data, workstation photos, existing samples and a step-by-step process description. Functional dimensions, contact areas, forces and required cycle count should be identified.
An approval part is recommended before operational use. Operator feedback can be included in a revised version before further units are produced.
Material, ergonomics and versioning
Material and construction are selected for loads, temperature, cleaning and contact areas. Edges, grip regions, weight and accessibility influence ergonomics.
Each approved geometry receives a traceable version. Changes to the workpiece or process must be coordinated with the corresponding jig version.

Frequently asked questions
Can a jig be developed without CAD data?
Yes. Photos, dimensions and a workpiece sample can provide the basis. Required modelling effort is clarified first.
Can several versions be maintained?
Yes. Changes are versioned clearly so workstation and workpiece remain associated with the correct jig.
Does a jig replace a safety assessment?
No. Safeguards, machinery requirements, workplace safety and internal approvals require separate assessment.
